Presentation Situation/problem with a Client

You are a CYC working at the local Boys and Girls Club of Canada. Lilah is a 12-year-old girl who attends the summer program with her younger siblings Hannah (9) and Olivia (7). Lilah has over-reacted in a few situations lately, been moody, and appears withdrawn. You notice she gets particularly upset when it is time to participate in outdoor activities.  She insists on applying her sister’s sunscreen and is anxious about how much time is spent outdoors, asking staff if they can go inside soon.

Client Background

The girls live at home with their father Paul who works night shift as a Warehouse Associate, and mother, Dianne who is a Dental hygienist. Dianne was diagnosed with malignant melanoma last month and has been receiving treatment.

Client’s Strengths/Needs.
Lilah enjoys gymnastics, swimming, and horse riding. Lilah loves animals and taking care of them. She loves to paint, colour and create jewelry.  Lilah is well liked by her peers and favours the company of 3 other girls and two of the boys in the camp group.

You think Lilah needs some extra supports to deal with her mother’s illness and education surrounding what to expect and how to deal with her feelings.

Reflection Questions:

How would you respond to Lilah’s fear of being outdoors?

How would you provide additional emotional support to Lilah and her family throughout the summer while Dianne continues her cancer treatment?

What follow up supports would you recommend when the summer program ends?
