Interview with a CYC
Zoe

Let’s talk

What are your credentials and when did you graduate?
I started my CYC education 12 years ago, received my diploma in 2014 & and my BCYCW in 2016.
Can you tell me about your current job?
My current job title is owner/operator of my business Sunshine Learning Station and Company. I’ve been self employed for over a year now. I provide individual support services for disabled children & youth in my community. I also work part time driving a sensory bus that run sensory events & parties for children.
What is your experience in the CYC field? I worked in both early childhood education programs & elementary schools as a 1-1 support worker. I ran a before and after school care in an elementary school. I spent time with Little Warriors at the Be Brave Ranch treatment facility for children and teenagers who’ve experienced sexual abuse.
What is the best part of your job?
I love being in the in-between with my clients. I like appreciating where my clients are in moment. What are their strengths, how are they meeting their needs. All behaviour is communication. Assume competency no matter what their speaking abilities are.
Can you tell me about a specific incident with a child that you found challenging?
I recently had a new client tell me they didn’t want me to come back ever, to leave now and told me and the speech therapist off. Mom and dad were mortified, I was ecstatic that they were using their words & telling us how they were feeling.
Did you experience any further negativity towards your reception?
Last time I was “allowed” to come back as long as I brought a snack to share.
